It's almost time for fall family photos! Minnesota is known for its beautiful fall foliage, making it the perfect time to update your family photos. Another bonus of fall family photos? You get to use your photos for the most beautiful family holiday card. Deciding what to wear for your family photos might be one of the toughest parts when it comes to your family's photo session. Between coordinating colors and finding something that everyone in the family will ACTUALLY wear, this daunting task can seem overwhelming. I get it! Let me help break it down for you in 3 simple steps.
Step One: Pick ONE Outfit
First, you're going to pick ONE outfit. As a mom myself, I tend to pick my kids' outfits first. What color pops with their eyes? Do you want to coordinate with the beautiful Minnesota fall foliage? Does your toddler have a favorite dress from Target? Pick one outfit and let that be the starting point for the rest of the family!
One extra note here: it's OK to pick an outfit with a pattern (plaid, floral, maaaaybe some polka dots), but choose one and make sure to coordinate (not match) your other outfits around that pattern. Keep reading to see what I mean.
Step Two: Coordinate Colors
Because fall in Minnesota is SO vibrant and beautiful, we want to be mindful of how much color we put into our photos. You can never go wrong with muted colors and earthy tones. Think cream, brown, khaki, burnt orange, deep green or navy blue. I like to pick one color for 2-3 members of the family to wear and then coordinate everyone else with neutrals. And remember- we want to coordinate colors, not match them.
Example 1: Mom & toddler girl in deep green, dad in khaki & white, baby brother in khaki & cream
Example 2: Baby boy in plaid top with burnt orange & brown colors and khaki pants, mom in cream, dad in khaki pants and burnt orange top
Example 3: Baby girl in mustard yellow dress & white tights, toddler boy in white Henley and khaki pants, mom in cream dress, dad in khaki pants and plaid button up
Step Three: Give it a Test Run!
After surfing Pinterest for Inspo and placing massive Amazon and Target orders (knowing very well that you're planning on returning 90% of your orders of course), you finally found the perfect outfits for your fall family photos. It's the day of your session and you realize that your daughter's dress is too tight. Your bra strap is showing in your dress. And your husband is so uncomfortable in his shirt. AHH!
To avoid this scenario, give all of your outfits a test run a good week before your session. Things to look for:
-Are diapers covered up?
-Are shirts staying tucked in?
-Bra straps showing?
-Any holes in anything?
-Are shoes comfortable?
If you realize that something isn't working, you'll still have time to find a replacement or two.
